Introduction to Ultrasonic Time-of-Flight Measurement & the Prosonic M FMU40

1. Ultrasonic Time-of-Flight (ToF) Measurement

Ultrasonic ToF measurement works by emitting sound pulses—typically ultrasonic—towards a target surface. The sensor then measures the time it takes for the echo to return. Since the speed of sound in the medium (e.g., air) is known, this time interval can be converted into a distance measurement, enabling accurate, non-contact detection of levels in tanks, silos, channels, and more.

The Prosonic M FMU40 by Endress+Hauser is a rugged, compact ultrasonic sensor designed for continuous, non-contact level and flow measurement using the ToF principle.
